Known for its strong flavor among popular dishes, Apium graveolens or more commonly known as celery, or Kinchay here in the Philippines, is a plant variety from the family of Apiaeae. We Filipinos are used to seeing and using this as part of our everyday cooking (for dishes like pancit, and soups). You’ve probably heard that among the list of veggies, celeries are known for lowering blood pressure. But wait, there’s more to celery than just lowering your BP! Aside from being a rich source of Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and the stems being a source of vitamins B1, B2 and B6, scientists have also identified other types of antioxidants present in celery, which helps protect us from various conditions and illnesses, making it a must-add to our diet.

- Celery plant has been known to help lower blood pressure. Why? Aside from being a good source of potassium that aids in counteracting the negative effects of having too much salt in the diet, it contains a compound “3-n-butyl phthalide” that helps in relaxing blood vessels.
- Watching your weight? Don’t worry. Celery plant contains just about 16 calories per 100g making it one of the lowest calorie foods and is virtually fat-free!
- Drinking celery juice is also a great idea for those who want to lose weight because it has high water content, helping you feel full for longer and helps you stay away from sweets as it curb your cravings.
