Ethnocentrism is acclaiming that one’s culture, race or ethnicity is the best and if incorporated with academic ethnocentrism is a term acclaiming one’s school rose up among the rest. If one is asked “what school are you from?” and you politely answer back, the on questioning you will somehow have prejudices of your character basing on what school you come from. Filipinos hate other cultures if it’s hitting below the racism belt but oblivious of the fact that it is rampant on the soil of his brethren. It will surely tickle one’s nerves if one is stereotyped. Psychology 101 blatantly speaks that every individual is indeed unique and therefore should be respected.
If we are having prejudices on a person regarding the school they come from we might as well degrade the effort of their parents whose sweat turns into blood every time tuition fees is evident in the fridge along with its soda magnet. “And now you are saying that school is not a factor blah, blah, blah” and I beg to disagree. Schooling is a great medium of honing and molding a person to be upright and prepares him towards the waves of this brutal world. But as said earlier, individual differences should be respected. It depends on the person’s character on how he develops into a productive creature.
One should be proud of his Alma Mater but that does not mean that one should boast. “The person who stops learning after graduation becomes uneducated the day after” and thus was called commencement is coined to be the start to lit the fire of passion towards innovation and education bringing the gifts of your alma mater towards serving the hungry world.
