Facts About Lung Cancer That Will Blow Your Mind

Cancer is the third leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the country today. Among the types of cancer that we have known for years, lung cancer remains to be one of the leading causes of death especially among the male population. In fact, the Cancer Network (C-Network), an advocacy group which works in patrnership with the Philippine Cancer Society and the Department of Health, said more than 17,000 new cases are diagnosed every year… of which 15,695 are expected to succumb to the disease which has a survival rate of only 5.28 percent. As of this writing, approximately 43 Filipinos die of lung cancer everyday, a truth that is almost hard to fathom especially because smoking remains to be the main culprit for this shocking mortality rate. Again, according to Cancer Network:

The level of risk is affected by the length of time one has smoked and the quantity smoked. A person who smoked two packs per day for 20 years is eight times more likely to develop lung cancer than someone who smoked only one pack per day for 40 years. Non-smokers are also at risk. Spouses of smokers have a 25% chance of developing the disease, whereas co-workers of smokers exhibited an increased risk of 17%.

Smoking is clearly a bad habit but obviously, many Filipinos continue to be blind and deaf about this truth. Cigarette smoking has no clear health benefits and more often than not, lung cancer and other diseases serve the final blow for those people who keep on neglecting this fact. Let us stop lung cancer from ruining our lives by putting an end to the vicious activity called cigarette smoking.
