Garlic— the healing herb.


Since it was introduced by Spain to our country during the Spanish era, garlic has then become one of the in demand ingredients and seasoning. It is widely used in almost any country, with over 300 species of it grown worldwide that’s why I bet you wouldn’t have any difficulty in finding these in the market.

After all, what would kitchens be without our ever reliable ingredient—garlic?

Its name originally came from the old English word garleac, meaning “spear leek”.

Aside from being one of the ever famous and widely sought kitchen ingredient, did you know that garlic is useful in many other ways?

With a scientific name of Allium sativum, it is known to contain a high amount of vitamins and minerals, chlorine, iodine and sulfur, making it a good source of many health benefits.

The strong smell of garlic is due to the chemical reaction that happens when the garlic cells are broken, that’s why the smell is stronger just after mincing it.

Here are some fun facts about garlic that you might want to know in case you’re interested about the many benefits of garlic:

  • It has antimicrobial and antifungal properties which help to fight against infection.
  • LDL, termed as the bad cholesterol, which increases the risk for heart disease is said to be effectively controlled by garlic. It is believed that garlic lowers the blood cholesterol levels and prevents the buildup of plaques in the arteries.  Amazing, isn’t it?
  • With the help of the powerful compound, Allicin, an antioxidant – it is said to help fight acne—a major skin problem among teenagers and adults as well.
  • Stimulates digestion by activating the secretion of gastric juices.
  • When the cloves are crushed and incorporated in water or drinks, it is said to help relieve stomach upsets and digestive disorders. Its antiseptic effect also helps cleanse the blood and prevent infectious diseases and inflammations of the stomach and intestines.
  • Garlic and warts: some people believe that garlic can cure warts. The garlic wart cure involves rubbing a fresh garlic clove all over the wart(s) and covering it with a bandage. Warts are commonly caused by the human papilloma virus. Although scientific data on this is limited, since garlic kills many viruses it may also kill warts. One small study found that garlic oil applied 2x day removed warts within 1-2 weeks (Dehghsani et al. 2005)
  • It is said to help your plants from aphid attacks. Simply mix crushed garlic with water and spritz the leaves of the plant/s with the spray.
  • Others would skip on eating this and including it in their menu because of its strong smell. One little tip: Drinking lemon juice or eating a few slices of lemon will stop bad garlic breath.
  • There’s this belief that garlic keeps vampires away as well as evil spirits.
  • One good to know fact, fear of garlic is called alliumphobia

Over the years, garlic, when taken in just the right amount, has been known as a very safe food and herb and there are few serious garlic side effects to be really worried about.

Here are some pointers that you might want to take note of:

  • Garlic should not be taken before a surgery because it has anticoagulant properties that inhibit the clotting of blood. And also, people who are on blood-thinning medications must not take garlic for the same reason.
  • If you think you have allergies on garlic, skip on eating this and including it on your menu.
