Anyone with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) will know that living with it is really horrible, painful and embarrassing. You never know when the next attack is going to strike. Some sufferers are always on the lookout for the closest rest room and plan their day around not being too far away from a bathroom. Other people don’t go there often enough. Either way, the pain can be awful.
The good news is that there is a better way. The answer revolves around eating a better diet. Most IBS sufferers eat a diet made up of white bread, white rice and white pasta. The grains used to produce these foods have had the outer layer stripped away, removing the natural fiber and leaving the food with little nutritional value (about as much as an old shoe!). What’s left is refined carbohydrates that quickly convert to sugar in our digestive system. When we do not get enough fiber in our diet we suffer. Fiber bulks up our stools and assists them to pass through our bodies. Without adequate natural fibre from whole grain foods, vegetables and fruits we are far more likely to get constipated.
The other problem with these refined carbohydrates and the sugars produced when they are broken down, is that the harmful bacteria in our intestines love them. They flourish and overtake the beneficial bacteria in our gut. This makes food more difficult to digest, resulting in a weakening of the intestinal wall, which in turn worsens Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) symptoms.
Naturally, IBS sufferers are always looking out for foods that trigger an attack. The problem is that there is often no consistency because sometimes a food they thought was “safe” to eat can suddenly cause an attack. The issue here is that it’s not so much the food that’s eaten but what other foods it’s combined with. Some foods just cannot break down properly when combined with others and this can create uncomfortable bloating and embarrassing gas. This is because the wrong combinations of food can create acid in your system. This includes foods when eaten separately on their own the are both alkaline forming foods, but when combined they transform to acid forming foods. Your entire digestive tract can be in a state of stress, making it difficult for waste material to move through the intestines like it’s supposed to, which then leads to diarrhea or constipation. There has to be a better way, and there is.
