I know it’s kind of hard to become a night shift nurse due to many reasons. Below are great tips that discuss health advice that every night shift nurses can possibly follow. I find this article good and helpful enough for nurses, especially for those who are doing the night shift duty.

Health Tips for Night Shift Nurses

Many people often connect night shift to weight gain. Weight gain is likely to happen when one works at night because this changes our internal body clock. This throws our body off balance, from its sleeping hours to its normal eating schedule. Working at night also makes some people, like nurses, sleep deprived. Worse, it also makes people want to eat at odd hours.

Sleep deprivation causes weight gain because the less hours of sleep you get, the fewer calories your body burns. Having an adequate sleep, on the other hand, improves digestion and metabolism.

Getting a nursing job is now considered an achievement. With so many jobless professionals out there, one must appreciate the job she has despite the irregular schedules she needs to work in. From paramedic to RN to respiratory therapists, everyone in the medical or healthcare field is expected to work at night sometimes.

Now that we are aware of the repercussions of working at night, what steps should we take to control our weight and have adequate rest?

1. Change your diet.

Many nurses tend to rely on processed food. While this is a very convenient thing to do for nurses who are too busy to work, this may take a toll on their body. Processed foods are saturated with fat, oil, sugar or salt. If eaten on a daily basis, one will definitely gain weight.

The best way to avoid this is to make your own food. Make your own salad, which really only takes about five to ten minutes. You can also use different methods of cooking aside from frying, such as steaming, broiling and boiling. The less oil and fats you take, the healthier.

2. Avoid being sedentary.

Some nurses tend to be sedentary, especially when their main task is paperwork. It is important for employees to move more. This burns calories and produces endorphins. If there is no way that your work allows you to move, take time off your busy schedule to exercise and workout. Exercise at home for at least 10-15 minutes a day.

3. Get enough sleep.

This is especially difficult for graveyard shift workers. The trick to getting a good sleep is to prepare for it. Play soothing music or exercise thirty minutes before going to bed. Another good idea is to take a warm bath. This will make you feel relaxed and rejuvenated. Another good idea is to drink warm milk.

From respiratory therapists, paramedic to RN, working night shifts is inevitable. What advice would you give to your fellow nurses or coworkers to lose unwanted weight?

  • Great tips. In reality a person can live 4 or 5 days with water and no food, but he/she cannot live more than 3 days without sleep, and it is such a great activity, which improves body metabolism and boosts up the energy levels.

  • and that the reason why i really am gaining weight. sigh!
after duty eat the sleep. goodness.
i will change my diet promise! =)

  • It’s also best not to rely on energy drinks. They’re only temporary fixes and you get the bad side effects like the jitters and crash. Get the real deal through sufficient sleep.
