We all rely on sources of fresh and clean water to keep our bodies hydrated and healthy, however what happens when there is an emergency situation whereby we no longer have access to this type of water? It can easily happen that the water gets contaminated and dirty and can no longer be cleaned and filtered. Water contamination can happen either by natural causes or due to human interaction and it is useful to know how to deal with such an emergency situation, since after all water is the main source of life on Earth and without drinking it, we could no longer survive.
When the water is contaminated by various microorganisms and bacteria, it means that it can make you ill. One way to deal with this is to basically boil the water and then let it cool down before drinking. It is very effective and a really inexpensive way to go about it. Just make sure that you boil your water for at least 10 minutes before it is ready for consumption. Of course the main disadvantage to using this method is the fact that you can only boil relatively small quantities of water at one time, so it’s not really an efficient way to go about it.
If you don’t mind the light bleach taste or smell, you can also add household bleach (“Chlorox”) as this is a good disinfectant and cleaner. What you need to do is use a few drops in your water and leave it for about half an hour before drinking. Personally I can’t stand the taste or smell of bleach so I don’t use this method, but I do know people who do.
Using water filters is a great way to keep your drinking water free of various contaminants. There are many different types of filters that cater to several types of bacteria and microorganisms, so you have to first know which contaminants you are dealing with in order to buy the most effective water filter for your home.
You can also find water purification tablets that should help kill microorganisms from the water. You can easily find these at any drugstores and supermarkets and they are cheap as well.
As you can see in an emergency situation you have many options for water purification so that you are not left with having to drink the dirty water that can make you sick. Just make sure you know about these options so that you are able to employ them should the need ever arise.
